As of now, All over the state,

ஒட்டுமொத்த ரசிகர்களின் ஒரே எதிர்பார்ப்பு எந்திரன்.
Not only fans,

Yes Of-Course :-)

Ariyanathan(R) THOUSAND PILLAR HALL

THOUSAND PILLAR HALL

The THOUSAND PILLAR HALL (Madurai Sri Arulmugu Meenakshi Amman Kovil) was built by ARIYANATHA MUDALIAR the minister of a Nayaka ruler. It was during this period that the invaluable diamond crown to the Goddess was dedicated. The merchant community known as "Nagarathar" have done a lot to the temple.

KUMBABISHEGA:

The THOUSAND PILLAR HALL Kumbabishega in the year 1877 was organised by devotees from this community. Again the same community repeated the massive exercise in the year 1963. Recent Kumbabishega dt:08-04-2009.

The Meenakshi Amman Temple at Madurai is the sear of artistic splendor. The THOUSAND PILLAR HALL designed by the Nayakas stands till date as a fine example of the architechtural achievements of the period.

MADURAI THOUSAND PILLAR HALL:

The THOUSAND PILLAR HALL is situated in the Northern end of the Temple. It is to the North of Veeravasantharaya Hall. There are many halls in this Temple. The biggest of them all is the Thousand Pillared Hall. It is a contribution of Viswanatha Nayaka a Nayaka Ruler. He has left his stamp of the beauty of the temple by building this Thousand Pillar Hall. The THOUSAND PILLAR HALL was built in the 16 A.D. by the Nayaka Ruler.

The statue of Viswanatha Nayakar is erected in one of the Pillars in this hall. The sculptures in this hall are so beautiful that one wonders that why were they not given life?Every sculpture is very lively. The Nayakas love for art may be seen and even read from the sculptures. The only handicap of these sculpture is that man was able to only carve them and was not able to give life to them.We can find many rare sculptures in this THOUSAND PILLAR HALL . The sculpture of "Kootha Peruman" is situated at the heart of the Hall. People wonder at the mightness of the statute.

The Thousand Pillar Hall actually contains Nine Hundred and Eighty Five Pillars (885).The Pillars in the front row & middle rows contain many sculputres of different poses and sizes. Every sculpture hasbeen carved in a separate stone. There are no joint sculpture carved in a stone. The choice of the stone is by itself a beauty.

THE SCULPTURES :
The THOUSAND PILLAR HALL has sculpture's exhibiting different beauties. There are some sculptures with beautiful shape and size. Some have attractive faces. Some sculpture when tapped gives a beautiful sound. This is because of the nature of the stones. There are some sculpture showing the braveness in the people of this city.

These sculptures look very manly and are carved in such a way that the nerves are protruding. These sculpture look brave and when picturised as read, may even be terrorising. The sculptures from which the sound comes out are carved in stones which has some hollow portion inside.

It is said that it is very difficult to carve a sculpture in a hollow stone. This may not be worth on the long run, went the saying. But defying all these beliefs these sculpture have lived for centuries.

The THOUSAND PILLAR HALL and the sculpture is a beauty which is very difficult to put it in words. The pillars in the front part of the hall (the first and the last) are made up of many small pillars. As they are a unit of many of pillars, they are huge in size.

The pillar in the Eastern side of the Thousand Pillar Hall contains a small ball made of stone. The ball in capable of revolving all the time.

The sculptures containing the statue of Lord Siva, Kannapa, Dalavay Ariya Nathan, Hari Chandran, Chandramathi, Kuravan, Kurathi are found in the Middle part of the hall. The sculptures display different emotions and acts.

The sculpture of Lord Siva at the front part of the Thousand Pillared Hall displays the "Thiruvilayadal" ( Angam Vettiya Tiruvilayadal)".The most beautiful sculpture, as to my observation is that of "Lord Kannapar" , who stands with "One Leg" in eyes of the Lord Sivalingsm and he is plucking his eye.

This scene is watched by "Shivakosaiyar" from a hidden place. There is sculpture showing "Chandramathi" with her child lying in her arms. The sculpture is in such a way that the sadness of Chandramathi is clearly reflected.

There are sculptures showing the work done by the "Kuravan and Kurathi".There is one sculpture showing the "kurathi" having her child in a basket. Even the beauty of the basket is seen from sculpture.

There is another sculpture showing Dalavay Ariya Nathan sitting on a beautiful horse.A view from the Western side of the pillars, next to the pillar in the centre, will give us the sight of the sculptures of Pandiyan, Shivaveeram, Ganapathy with Amuthakalasam, Dhuvara Balagar, Murugar, Nagendran & Kalingan.

Theses sculptures are carved in separate stones. We can see a "Five Headed Cobra" in the head of the "Narayana".The Sculpture of "Kalaimagal", is in the pose where she holds a "Veena" in her lap and her hand slanted towards one side. The Post is that of "Kalaimagal" playing "Veena".We can see that "stringe" and the "wood" in the sculpture.

This is an example of the art of Nayakar and the craftmanship. There are sculptures of Thirumal, and angry faced Arjun, Draupathi and others.

We can also find a sculpture of a man lifting a woman. Almost all the pillars in the Hall have a "Yalli". When we enter the hall in the middle we can see many paintings and sculptures in both the top and bottom parts of the hall.

Every man who has a sight of this gets carried away by the love of art of the Nayakas. The bottom part contains the sculptures of Pitchatchannar, Dharman, Bheeman, Rathi, Veerabatheran and Others.

The Western side contains the sculptures Aggini, Manmadhan, Poorada Murugar and Mohini. There are sculptures which gives out different sounds when tapped in different sides. The sculptures are Rathi sitting on an Annam and the Statute of Veerabatheran.

The manner of arrangement and the models of the sculpture show the culture of the people of that era.
